HubSpot lead scoring

HubSpot lead scoring that tells your reps who to call first

Your reps can't call everyone today. Lead scoring ranks contacts, companies and deals by how well they fit and how interested they look, so the best ones rise to the top. HubSpot also offers AI scores that learn from past wins. We set up the version your data can support.

Free, 30 minutes, and you'll leave with at least one clear next step.

What does lead scoring do?

Lead scoring gives each record points. An operations director at a mid-size company might earn points for job title, company size and industry. The same person earns more points for visiting your pricing page twice this week and booking a demo. When the total crosses a line you set, HubSpot can flag the lead, assign an owner or create a call task.

Your best reps should spend their mornings on the buyers most likely to buy. Without a score, they tend to call whoever filled out a form last, or whoever they already know. A serious buyer from a new account can wait days while a student who downloaded a guide gets a call.

Lead scoring needs Marketing Hub or Sales Hub at the Professional or Enterprise level. Contact scores need Marketing Hub. Deal scores need Sales Hub.

What we do

Which kinds of scores can HubSpot build?

Fit score

How closely a contact or company matches your ideal buyer. Industry, company size, job title, location and buyer type all count here.

Engagement score

How interested a contact or company looks right now. Page visits, email clicks, form fills, demo or sample requests and meetings booked all add points.

Combined score

Fit and engagement together, for contacts, companies or deals. HubSpot shows the total, fit and engagement numbers separately, so reps can see why a score is high.

AI score

HubSpot looks at which past contacts became customers and scores new ones the same way. It works on contacts only and needs Marketing Hub Enterprise.

Signals that matter most

  • Visits to pricing, contact, demo request or product detail pages
  • A second person from the same company showing up on your site
  • Job titles that buy, such as owner, director, buyer or office manager
  • Industry and company size that match your best current customers
  • A location inside the area you actually serve
  • Points taken away for student, job seeker, competitor or junk email addresses

Do you get more leads than your reps can call?

Score now if

  • You get more leads than your reps can call in a day
  • You know what your best customers have in common
  • Your forms capture company, role and location
  • Sales and marketing agree on what a ready lead looks like
  • You're on Marketing Hub or Sales Hub Professional or higher

Wait if

  • You get a few leads a week and reps already call every one
  • Company and job title fields are mostly blank
  • There's no agreed next step when a lead scores high
  • Most deals come from repeat customers who never fill out a form
  • You want AI scores but have fewer than 50 past contacts to learn from
How it works

We build the score from last year's wins

  1. Week 1

Study your last year of wins

We pull the customers you won and the leads that went nowhere, and look for what set them apart. You provide HubSpot access and a sales lead who knows the accounts.

  2. Week 1 to 2

    Fix the fields scoring reads

If industry, company size or job title is blank on most records, the score will be wrong. We fill gaps with HubSpot's data enrichment and tighten your forms.

  3. Week 2

Write the scoring rules with sales

We draft fit and engagement points, including negative points for leads you don't want, and review them with your sales lead line by line.

  4. Week 2 to 3

    Test against past deals

We score last year's leads and check that the ones you won land near the top. If they don't, we adjust before anyone relies on it.

  5. Week 3

    Connect the score to action

A score only helps if someone acts on it. We add workflows that assign an owner and create a call task when a lead crosses the line. Reps also get a list of top-scored leads to open each morning.

Should you use HubSpot's AI scores?

AI contact scores sound like the easy answer. They can be, if you meet the bar. You need Marketing Hub Enterprise and at least 50 contacts for HubSpot to learn from, with at least 25 who became customers and 25 who didn't. The score only learns from the history you give it. If your records are old or wrongly marked as customers or not, it learns the wrong lesson.

For many companies, a hand-built fit and engagement score is the better start. Your sales team can read it, argue with it and trust it. Once you have clean history, an AI score can run alongside it so you can compare the two.

How do you keep scores from going stale?

A buyer who was very active last spring may have bought from someone else since. HubSpot handles this with score decay. Engagement points fade over 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and decay applies to past activity too. We usually match decay to your sales cycle, so a buyer who went quiet six months ago doesn't outrank one who visited yesterday.

You can also run more than one score on the same record. A company with separate teams for large accounts and small businesses can score each its own way.

What if the best signals live outside HubSpot?

Sometimes the strongest buying signal sits in another system, such as a customer who's buying less than usual in your billing or order system, or in an email that never got logged. HubSpot's scoring can't see those. We build custom AI workflows that read that data and write it into HubSpot fields, so your score can use it.

Ranking also helps you spot leads that slipped. When we audited one client's HubSpot account, a ranked list showed leads that had gone uncalled. In just over 45 days, all of them were back with sales.

FAQ

Lead scoring questions

Can we score leads on a Professional plan?

Yes. Fit, engagement and combined scores work on Marketing Hub or Sales Hub Professional. You only need Marketing Hub Enterprise for AI contact scores.

How many contacts does AI lead scoring need?

At least 50 contacts to learn from, with at least 25 who became customers and 25 who didn't. More history, and cleaner history, gives a better score.

Can we score companies, or only contacts?

Both. Fit and engagement scores work on contacts and companies, and combined scores also work on deals. If you sell to businesses, company scores often matter more, because several people from one account may be researching at once.

Can we have different scores for different teams?

Yes. HubSpot lets you build more than one score per record type, such as one per region or one per sales team.

What is score decay?

Decay lowers engagement points over time, so old activity counts for less. You can set it to 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. It doesn't apply to points based on list membership.

How often should we update the scoring rules?

Review them every quarter with sales. Check whether high-scoring leads are turning into deals. If they aren't, the rules need work.

Should sales or marketing own the lead score?

Both should agree on it, and one person should own it. We usually suggest the sales leader signs off on the rules, because reps are the ones who act on the score. Marketing keeps the forms and data clean so the score has something to read.
