Generative engine optimization (GEO)

A generative engine optimization agency that gets you named when buyers ask ChatGPT, Claude or Google

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of getting ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI answers to name your business. We do it for growing companies of all kinds, B2B and B2C. We start by checking what those tools say about you today.

Free, 30 minutes, and you'll leave with at least one clear next step.

What is generative engine optimization?

GEO means making your business easy for AI tools to read, believe and recommend. Say someone asks Perplexity for the best bookkeeping firm for restaurants in Chicago, or a gift brand that ships overnight. The answer names three or four companies. GEO is how you become one of them.

You'll also hear it called AEO (answer engine optimization), AI search optimization or LLM SEO. They all mean the same kind of work. HubSpot sells a tracking tool that's also called AEO, and we cover it on our HubSpot AEO page. This page is about the work itself, whatever tool you track it with.

How is GEO different from SEO?

The two overlap a lot, and good SEO helps GEO. Read each pair of lines across.

SEO (search engine optimization)

  • Goal is a high spot in a list of blue links
  • The buyer clicks through and compares sites
  • Success is measured in rankings and visits
  • Keywords are short, like "payroll services Denver"
  • Links to your site carry most of the outside weight
  • Google is the main place it plays out

GEO (generative engine optimization)

  • Goal is to be named inside the written answer
  • The buyer may get a short list without visiting any site
  • Success is measured in how often you're mentioned, and where
  • Questions are long, like "which payroll company is easiest for a 40-person business with staff in two states?"
  • Mentions on directories, industry sites, reviews and forums carry a lot of weight
  • ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI answers all play a part
The problems we see

Why do AI tools skip good companies?

When a strong business doesn't show up in AI answers, we usually find one or more of these.

Your words don't match the buyer's

Buyers ask for "same-day IT support." Your site only uses a package name, like "Pro Care." The AI can't connect the two, so it names a company that uses plain words.

The site is hard to read

Text that only loads with JavaScript, key details locked in PDFs and firewalls that turn away AI crawlers all leave the tools with a blank page.

Pages say nothing a tool can quote

"Quality solutions for every need" gives an AI nothing to repeat. Prices or price ranges, sizes, turnaround times and the areas you serve do.

Other sites have you wrong

An old address on a directory, a service you dropped years ago or a profile with two lines of text. AI tools repeat what they find.

How it works

What does Push do, and how long does it take?

Plain timelines for a typical growing company. Site fixes are in our hands. When AI tools notice them is on their schedule.

  1. Weeks 1 to 2

    Baseline

We list 20 to 30 questions your buyers really ask, pulled from sales calls, chats and inbound emails. We run them through the main AI tools and record who gets named, what's said about you and which sites get quoted.

  2. Weeks 2 to 6

    Make the site readable

We clear what blocks AI crawlers, make sure the text loads without extra code and move key details out of PDFs onto the page. We also add the plain names buyers use for what you sell.

  3. From month 2

Write pages that answer buyer questions

One page for each question buyers ask, with the answer in the first two sentences and facts a buyer can check, like what's included, how long it takes and where you serve.

  4. From month 2

    Fix how others describe you

We correct directories, industry profiles and review sites, and help you ask your customers for reviews.

  5. Monthly

    Track and report

Each month we rerun the same questions and track visits from AI tools in Google Analytics and HubSpot, so you can see what moved.

When will AI tools start naming us?

It varies, and no agency controls it. Site fixes land in the first weeks. AI tools then pick up changes on their own schedule, and some lean on older data longer than others. Plan on a few months before mentions change in a steady way. No one can promise you a spot in ChatGPT's answer by a set date.

What you can count on is the monthly report. Same questions, asked the same way, so changes are easy to spot.

Rules we follow on every GEO project

We use AI to help research and draft. These are the lines we don't cross.

  • No page goes live without your expert. A named person on your team, usually someone who knows the product or service best, reviews every page for accuracy before we publish.
  • No claims you can't back up. Facts, credentials and timelines come from your approved material, never from an AI's guess.
  • No fake reviews or planted posts. We help you ask the people who bought from you. We don't write reviews or post on forums as someone else.
  • No mass-produced pages. We publish fewer pages, each answering a question buyers ask.

What data does GEO use?

Mostly public information, meaning your website, your listings and what others say about you. We don't put customer records into AI tools for this work. If we use HubSpot data, like common questions from sales calls or chats, we read it inside HubSpot and take only the questions, not the names.

You also decide which AI crawlers may read your site. Some companies want every AI tool to see their public pages but keep pricing and customer areas off limits. We set that up with you.

When don't you need GEO?

If you sell to a short list of accounts who already know you, AI answers matter less. Your reps are the channel. If your SEO agency already tracks AI answers and fixes what it finds, keep them. And if HubSpot's AEO tool plus your marketing team can do the work, you may only need help picking the right questions to track.

GEO is one part of our AI agents and AI search work. If you also want AI handling sales or support tasks, see AI consulting.

Examples by industry

The questions buyers ask AI tools change by industry. These pages go deeper.

  • Manufacturing: putting product details on the page where AI can read them.
  • Construction: showing up when people ask who serves their area.
  • Ecommerce: getting named in "best brand for" answers.
FAQ

Generative engine optimization questions

Is GEO the same thing as AEO?

Close enough. GEO, AEO, AI search optimization and LLM SEO all mean getting AI tools to find and mention your business. People use different names for the same work.

Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my company?

Usually the AI tools can't read your site well, or they find too little about you elsewhere. Sites that load text with JavaScript or block AI crawlers are hard for them to read. Thin pages and missing directory listings hurt too. We check both in the first week.

How do you track whether AI tools recommend us?

Each month we run a fixed set of buyer questions through the main AI tools and count how often you're mentioned. We also measure visits from AI tools in Google Analytics and HubSpot.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend us?

No. AI companies decide how their tools answer. We can make your business easy to read and trust, fix what's wrong and show you monthly whether mentions are moving.

Should we let AI crawlers onto our website?

For public product and service pages, usually yes. If they can't read the page, they can't name you. You can still keep pricing, partner portals or customer areas off limits. Some firewalls block AI crawlers by default, so we check yours first.

Do we have to choose between SEO and GEO?

No. Most of what helps SEO also helps GEO, like fast pages, clear facts and trusted sites linking to you. GEO adds work on question-style pages, outside listings and tracking AI answers.

Which AI tools does generative engine optimization cover?

We track ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI answers. The fixes help across all of them, because they read the web in similar ways.

Do PDFs on our site hurt our AI visibility?

They often do. Many AI tools read PDFs poorly or skip them. Keep the PDF for download, and put the key facts on the page itself as plain text and tables.
