Fragrance marketing for a product your shoppers can't smell through a screen

Perfume sells on scent, memory and gifting. Online, you have words, pictures and samples. We plan ads, sampling and email so that a first sample turns into a full bottle.

Free, 30 minutes, and you'll leave with at least one clear next step.

How do you sell a scent online?

With words people can feel, and then with a sample. Notes like bergamot and vetiver mean a lot to fragrance fans and very little to everyone else. Most shoppers respond better to a place or a moment, like a beach at night or a cedar closet. A good ad gives them something they can almost smell.

Video helps because people can see a reaction. A creator who describes a scent in everyday words, and wears it on camera, does more than a bottle on a marble counter. But no ad lets someone smell it. For most fragrance brands, the sample is where the sale happens.

Why the discovery set is your most important product

We haven't published a fragrance case study yet. If we worked on your account, we'd start with the discovery set. It's usually the first order and the step before a full bottle.

The number to watch is how many sample buyers go on to buy a full bottle. A credit toward the full size, sent with the set, gives them a reason to come back. The follow-up emails wait a week or so, long enough to wear each scent a few times. Then they ask which one they liked and recommend the bottle that matches.

Ads get judged on that whole path. A campaign that sells cheap sample sets to people who never buy a bottle looks good for a week and loses money. One that finds bottle buyers is worth a higher cost per sample.

The problems we see

What fragrance brands run into

Perfume has shipping rules

Most perfume contains alcohol, which carriers treat as flammable. Air and international shipping come with limits and extra cost.

A bottle lasts for months

Reorders come slowly. Growth has to come from new customers, new scents and gifting as much as from repeat bottles.

Gifting drives the calendar

The holidays, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Father's Day can bring in a big share of the year's sales in a few weeks.

Famous names own the searches

Shoppers search for well-known perfumes by name. A newer brand rarely gets searched, and borrowing big names in ads invites trouble.

Planning the gifting calendar

Gift buyers need help choosing a scent for someone else. A gift guide sorted by who it's for helps. So does an easy exchange when a scent misses. Gift receipts and a clear delivery date matter a lot here.

The holidays are the biggest window, so creative and offers get tested in the fall, before ad costs climb. Valentine's Day and Mother's Day come next. Father's Day matters a lot for brands with men's scents.

After each peak, we look at who received the gift. A card in the box with samples of your other scents invites the recipient to find their next favorite. Some of those recipients become your best customers.

How it works

How we'd get started

  1. Day 1

    A free 30-minute call

We look at your sample sales, bottle sales and ads, and show you where buyers drop off.

  2. First weeks

    Sample-to-bottle tracking

A clear view of how many sample buyers come back, with flows built around it.

  3. Ongoing

    Ads and the gift calendar

Creative tested every week, judged on bottle sales, with each gifting peak planned ahead.

Ways to describe a scent that work in ads

  • Where it takes you, like a garden after rain or a bonfire on the beach
  • When to wear it, like a summer evening or a winter office
  • What it smells close to, using everyday things such as fresh laundry, cedar or vanilla
  • How long it lasts on skin and how strong it is
  • Who wears it in the video, and what they say in their own words
  • The notes, in plain words, for the fans who want them
FAQ

Fragrance questions

How do you get people to buy perfume without smelling it?

Describe the scent in everyday terms, film people's first reactions, and make sampling easy. A discovery set with a credit toward a full bottle turns curiosity into a first order.

Should we sell discovery sets at a loss?

Price them to cover your cost if you can, and add a credit toward the full size. Judge the set on how many buyers go on to buy a bottle.

Can we ship perfume by air or overseas?

With limits. Carriers treat most perfume as flammable, so air and international shipping have rules and extra fees. Check with your carrier, and don't run ads where you can't ship at a fair cost.

Can our ads compare our scent to a famous perfume?

We avoid using other brands' names in ad text. It can break platform rules and invite legal complaints. Describing your scent in your own words is safer, and your lawyer should check anything close.

How often do fragrance customers buy again?

Slowly, since a bottle lasts months. Your Shopify data shows the typical gap. Between bottles, new scents, travel sizes and gift buying keep customers coming back.

Is TikTok a good fit for fragrance brands?

It can be, because creators are good at describing scent on camera. We test it with a fixed budget and judge it on bottle sales, the same way we judge Meta.

Find out how many sample buyers come back

We'll look at your discovery set sales on the call and show you how many turn into full bottles, and how we'd raise that number.
