Bakery marketing for edible gift brands that sell online and ship
A gift order has two people in it and a hard deadline, and the box can melt or go stale on the way. We plan the ads, email and texts around each of those. Baked Bouquet won more than 10,000 new customers with us.
Free, 30 minutes, and you'll leave with at least one clear next step.
Why edible gifts are harder to sell online than in the shop
Bakeries, gift basket makers and edible bouquet brands all run into these.
The product needs explaining
In the shop, people taste it or pick it up. Online, a photo has to do all the work, and clever products are easy to misread.
The delivery date beats the price
A birthday gift that shows up a day late is a failed order. Shoppers care more about when it arrives than what it costs.
Fresh food can't travel far
Some boxes can ride ground shipping for days. Others need to arrive tomorrow, which shrinks the area you can sell to.
Corporate orders show up out of nowhere
One office manager wants sixty boxes to sixty addresses by Friday, and the kitchen hears about it on Wednesday.
Who are you selling to on a gift order?
Two people. The buyer picks it, pays for it and worries about whether it'll arrive on time. The recipient opens the box and decides whether the gift was a hit. Your ads speak to the buyer. Your packaging and the first bite speak to the recipient.
So ads should show the moment of giving. When we started with Baked Bouquet, many online shoppers didn't realize the flowers were cupcakes. We built the ads in stages. The first ones showed what the product is. The next showed people giving it as a gift. Only then came the offers.
Buyers also need to trust the delivery. Order-by dates belong in the ad, on the product page and in every reminder. A delivery date picker at checkout lets the buyer choose the day and see it confirmed. Turning recipients into customers is its own job, and we cover it on our food and beverage page.
The occasions we plan a gifting year around
- Valentine's Day, with a tight delivery window and little room for error
- Mother's Day, a big spring peak with its own shipping crunch
- Graduations and teacher thank-yous in May and June
- Birthdays all year round, the steadiest source of orders
- Sympathy and get-well gifts, which need quiet, respectful ads
- Thanksgiving through New Year's, including office and client gifts
Should edible gift ads target local or national buyers?
It depends on how far your product can travel and still taste right. We start by mapping where ground shipping arrives in time from your kitchen. Ads run hardest there, because those orders cost less to ship and arrive fresh. Areas that need overnight shipping get their own budget, with prices that cover it, or get left out.
If you deliver locally, local delivery gets its own campaigns. Many gift searches name a place, like "cupcake delivery" plus a nearby town. Google search ads can answer those searches with your delivery area and order-by time. Google Ads was one of Baked Bouquet's main channels.
Each shipping zone gets its own last order date before a holiday, because ground shipping takes longer to reach some areas. Ads in each zone stop on that zone's date. Local delivery and pickup can keep selling for a few more days. That way you aren't paying for orders you can't fill.
Planning the kitchen around the ads
For Baked Bouquet, we forecast holiday orders so baking kept up with demand. Less food went to waste, and a second location opened with the same ad approach.

Edible gifts and bakeries questions
How do you advertise a product people don't understand at first glance?
In stages. The first ads show what it is, the next show it being given, and the offers come last. That's how we built Baked Bouquet's ads, because many shoppers didn't realize the flowers were cupcakes.
Should an edible gift brand ship nationwide or stay local?
Start where ground shipping arrives fresh and on time, and grow from there. Areas that need overnight shipping only make sense if your prices cover the cost.
Can we remind customers about birthdays they ordered for last year?
Yes. Ask for the occasion and date at checkout or in the gift message step. A reminder email or text then goes out before the date comes around again, to people who agreed to hear from you.
How should a bakery handle corporate gift orders?
Treat them like small sales deals. A quote, an address list, a delivery deadline and a check-in with the kitchen. We track them in HubSpot and remind those buyers before the next holiday season.
How should we advertise sympathy gifts?
Quietly. Use calm photos and plain words, with no countdowns or discounts. Make same-day and next-day options easy to find, because these orders are rarely planned. Keep sympathy buyers out of cheerful holiday emails unless they've also ordered for another occasion.
Do Google ads work for bakeries that ship?
They work well for occasion and delivery searches, where people already want to send something. Google Ads was one of Baked Bouquet's main channels. We match each campaign to the area you can deliver to on time.
